I went to Whitsundays with my mum and sister, my mum was on holiday from the UK. Landed at Hamilton Island and took a ferry over to Airlie Beach where we had one free nights accomidation at Base Hostel. Yes, my mum was very brave and spent a night in a six bed mixed dorm. We went on a PlowerPlay tour. The boat was a Catamaran with one driver and one host. Both guys where really good and bounced off each other. We had two nights on the boat.
The first afternoon was spent setting a sail and with the sun out we did some sunbathing before we stopped for a afternoon snorkel. January is stinger season which means nasty little jelly fish are about resulting in you wearing a wet suit when in the sea. The coral was beautiful and the number of fish we saw was incredible. My sister and I even had a white tip shark swim under us, and we didn’t panic…much. That evening was spent drinking enjoying tea and having a early night thanks to all the fresh air. The boat had dolphin lights on so we could still see the fish.
It was a early start the next day as we set sail to Whitsundays, it was terrible weather creating rough seas. Once at White Heaven Beach we were led to the viewing point to see the beautiful beach. The photo below speaks for itself. Even in terrible weather it still looked incredible.
After a paddle in the clear waters searching for stingrays we were back on the boat were we did spot a Sea Cow and a Turtle. The afternoon was spent snorkelling or relaxing in the hot tub which was onboard. It was another long day which meant after a couple of drinks people retired to their beds early. The next day was spent traveling back to the harbour. The tour was really good, the boat was very nice and clean. Food was basic but very tasty and it was bring your own booze.
Our last night in Airlie Beach was spent relaxing around the man made lagoon before cocktails and food. The next morning we took our two hour flight back to Sydney. Below is my favourite photo I took when snorkelling.
